The Turkish Aegean Coast region
On the Bodrum Peninsula buildings are not permitted to be built more than 2 stories high, and there are no buildings higher than 3 stories in the whole Peninsula. This tends to make the area look particularly attractive. Most of the buildings are white washed cubes, similar to those in the Greek Islands. This is because this part of Turkey used to belong to Greece and some of the Greek Islands used to belong to Turkey. As you can imagine, there is a lot of history around the area.
History
Archaeological excavations have established that human habitation in the Yalikavak area began in around 2000BC, and there are ruins and artefacts from the Carian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman eras. The historic sites such as Sandima, Pasanda (Geris), Kandiba and Termil (Dirmil/Gökçebel) attract visitors from all over the world. Yalikavak is famous for the numerous windmills found in the vicinity. The winds, that until recently turned the vanes of these working windmills, now fill the sails of boats and windsurfs. Another “typical” feature found in abundance here are domed water cisterns which, in the past, were used in times of drought and are now being adapted for artistic and cultural uses.
A 20 minute road journey will take you to Bodrum Centre with its historic castle which was built from 1402 onwards, by the Knights of St John as the Castle of St. Peter or Petronium. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is also located in Bodrum town.
Ferry trips to the Greek island of Kos can be made from Turgutreis and Bodrum
Further afield you can visit Ephesus, the largest archaeological site in the world, the stunning pools at Pamukkale, the royal rock tombs at Dalyan, and the temple of Apollo at Didim.
Turgutreis
Turgutreis, on the Bodrum Peninsula, is named after Admiral Turgut Reis who was born in the village of Karabag which overlooks Turgutreis on the hillside above the town and where there is a statue to the Admiral in the village square. Turgut Reis was also known as "Dragut", he died of his wounds at the siege of Malta on 23rd June 1563. The town holds a three day festival around 23 June each year, when Turkish navel warships visit the bay and military bands and entertainers hold concerts in Ataturk Square.
There are large supermarkets and numerous local shops. There is also a large marina which opened in 2005, this houses a string of bars and restaurants, cafes and shops. You also have an open air cinema where you can sit back and enjoy a movie while sipping a cocktail or beer etc.
Turgutreis is a quieter option to the more touristy resorts close by such as Bodrum, Bitez and Gumbet. There is a very good beach and, as it is on the tip of the Bodrum Peninsula, the water quality is very good due to the currents passing through between the headland and adjacent islands. The Greek islands of Kos, Pserimos and Kalymnos are close by and can be seen from the coastline here. From June to October the ferry leaves Turgutreis for day visits to Kos (takes 45 mins).
In Turgutreis petty crime is almost nil. The town is safe and even walking around the markets there is a feeling of security. Buildings in Turgutreis are almost exclusively low rise meaning the view to the water is unimpeded from many places in the town.
To the tourist, the town has three main areas:
1: The beach
2: The square beside the mosque and the seaside restaurants.
3: The backstreet and market shopping.
The beach itself is a slim sandy beach not overly long and yet never too crowded even in August. The beaches are operated by the restaurant behind and all sunbeds are free. The standard of service on the beach is superb with all restaurants employing staff to work the beach. Turning up to the beach, you will be greeted by friendly faces keen to find the sunbeds and parasols of your choosing and locate them to the patch of sand you most want to settle on. There is an etiquette here. These beach boys will work hard to make your day pleasant and genuinely do care. The etiquette is that you will buy your drinks from the restaurant serving you - simple manners really. The service is not at all pushy and the drinks, being reasonably priced are quite pleasant on the beach.
The square in the centre of town is stunning and comes alive at night. On one side are the boats with their captains constantly encouraging custom. The prices of the boat rides really are superb. A whole day out on the water calling in on little islands to swim in the sea and snorkel with fishes costs approx £15.00 for an adult. This price is a full day trip with lunch included.
On the other side of the square is the mosque and the run of restaurants along the front. All these eateries are superb but when visiting it becomes easy to get hooked into one place due to the excellent standard of service.
The back streets and Saturday market are buzzing with places to eat and drink cheaply and bargains to be had. The rule here is always haggle. Do it politely and you will be well received. Most places settle on a price about three quarters of the list price.
Local buses (Dolmus) go to most local villages as well as Bodrum and are a cheap way of getting around. Other towns worth a visit by bus are Yalikavak, Gundgoan, Gumusluk, Akyarlar, Karaincir and buses to these run about every 20 mins or so until late at night.

Our 3rd Visit to Hidden Garden, we cherish the privacy the most | June 2024
Our 3rd visit to Hidden Garden Villa and the pool, beautiful garden and hence, privacy, is what we cherish most. We visited during a mini heatwave so the pool and shady areas on the patio were our salvation. James is always the perfect host and really cares for his guests - thank you James. Thanks too to Annie and Ian for arranging and then rearranging our airport transfer.

We had 2 blissful weeks of privacy in the delightful garden | June 2023
Return visit to Hidden Garden Villa, booked through Peninsular Villas Bodrum. James, our host, greeted us at the villa and we had 2 blissful weeks of privacy in the delightful garden. Total relaxation and a lovely private pool to dip into when the sun got too hot. The 2 tortoises even came to greet us and enjoyed treats of cucumber and water melon. The holiday was so good we are retuning again next year. Thank you James, and Annie at Peninsular Villas.

The same peaceful piece of paradise that we remembered | September 2022
Another excellent holiday booked through Annie at Peninsula Villas...we have been using their services for many years now.
Unfortunately we had to cancel our bookings for 2020 and 2021 due to covid, but Annie made this a painless process by transferring our deposit forward from year to year..
When we actually got there in September 2022 Hidden Garden Villa was the same peaceful piece of paradise that we remembered from the past. The villa is perfect for a relaxing holiday and is really well located for the town and beach. James the owner could not be more friendly and helpful.
Overall a five star experience from start to finish !!
Thanks Annie and James.

Wonderful week at the Hidden Garden Villa in Turgutreis | July 2022
Just returned from a wonderful week at the lovely Hidden Garden Villa in Turgutreis. The villa is beautifully appointed and the garden and pool area are stunning - made even better by regular appearances from Fred and Ginger, the friendly resident tortoises! The villa is a great location - convenient for the marina, the beach and the taxi rank/dolmus station for trips to the beautiful neighbouring towns of Gumusluk, Yalikavak and Bodrum. James, the owner, was very helpful, informative and on hand to give us advice and tips whenever needed (and even brought me a lovely bottle of wine on my birthday!). Annie was also amazing at keeping in touch and ensured that everything went smoothly from the point of booking until our departure some four years later! Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Peninsula Villas to anyone thinking of holidaying in the Bodrum area!

Everything from the moment we landed went perfectly | July 2022
We have just got back from the Hidden Garden Villa in Turgetreis after a fortnight's holiday. Everything from the moment we landed went perfectly, the transfer driver waiting, and then James ready to show us round the villa, garden and pool. James is the perfect host and a mine of local information, beaches, restaurants etc . The location is perfect, a quiet secluded neighbourhood, a shop around the corner for drinks, but only a 5 minute walk to the restaurants and beaches, the ferry to Kos nearby as well, a good day out ! I can totally recommend the villa and Peninsula holidays, I have used them several times ...excellent all round.

A Hidden Gem| Aug 2019
The Hidden Garden feels very traditional, but with modern facilities and a great private garden & pool. Whilst we ventured out a fair bit with shops, bars, restaurants and beach close by the villa has everything and we spent quite a few days reading & lounging by the pool as well as watching the antics of the two tortoise Fred & Ginger. James the owner was really helpful making sure we had everything we needed as well as recommending restaurants & where we might visit. All in all a very enjoyable relaxing holiday!

Wow! | June 2019
Its all been said before, but worth repeating:- Wow!, We have taken many villa holidays, however we have never had a stay in a villa that meets our every need like this one. The design and decor are amazing, reflecting James' style and as soon as you walk in it feels like home, not a dull holiday let. Absolutely everything has been well thought out and provided for. Perfect place to recharge the batteries. The garden is just beautiful and during our stay it sprung into life as many plants came into flower. The well maintained pool is a great way to cool off, have fun, swim, whatever suits. The two Tortoises, Fred and Ginger, danced there way round to us every morning and seem to be quite partial to a bit of lettuce, cucumber and watermelon.
And finally a big big thank you to James, he has been a a fantastic host with nothing being too much trouble. We also need to commend Annie at Peninsula Villas, she has responded quickly to all our requests, kept us informed at all stages of the booking and was a great help in organising transfers etc. I would have no hesitation in booking this specific villa, or in booking through Peninsula Villas again, their service has been exemplary.

Our honeymoon was wonderful at Hidden Garden| July 2017
This was my first time vacationing in Turkey, and I found The Hidden Garden on Trip Advisor for our honeymoon! We booked and paid through Annie Burnett via Peninsula Villas-she was always there to guide us. I was excited and when we arrived, the villa definitely met all our expectations and more! The garden is very intricate and beautiful, the pool spacious, and the building itself a perfect size for us- it's even good for a few more people too. Every need and utility is there from kitchen items and foods, cleaning supplies, basic comforts supplied in the guest room (towels), and bathroom necessities, etc. James made sure to wait for our arrival, and show us around the must-see spots downtown. He was always there for our questions, came over if we needed anything, and updated us whenever there was maintenance of the house. The tortoises were a delight to feed cucumber. The beach is a 10 minute walk away and so is the marketplace. Both were amazing and beautiful. In all, our honeymoon was wonderful and I'm completely satisfied with my experience. Thank you!

This was our 4th visit to Hidden Garden Villa. It is absolutely perfect for us. The garden is private and secluded yet the villa is close enough to the town to enjoy the shopping and restaurants. One of the nicest holidays we've had | May 2017
We really enjoyed our stay! James was lovely, he made sure we had everthing we needed, and if there were any problems he was there straight away to sort them. The villa and grounds were lovely, we spent most days around the pool as we wanted a quiet relaxing holiday. When we did go out, we looked forward to returning, as it felt like it was ours for two weeks. I loved pottering around the garden and looking after the plants, feeding the tortoises, which followed us around, Jim looked after the pool topping it up, brushing the leaves away and using the net to get the leaves out. The weather didn't really matter too much to us, overall I would say it was probably one of the nicest holidays we have had, I would love to return at some point.
Your customer service and booking process were excellent. Overall, apart from the few small issues we had a lovely time and would certainly love to return in the future
Please pass on our regards to James, and tell him if he wants any welding doing, Jim will be only to happy to come over for a couple of weeks ( with me of course)!

The location is perfect as it in walking distance of shops bars restaurants and the beachfront so no need for taxis. James is very helpful and cares a lot about his guests happiness and is always there should you need help/advice.

This villa is paradise if you want a relaxing holiday| September 2016
From the initial booking until after the holiday the service from Annie at Peninsula Villas, and the owner has been excellent. James (the owner) has been attentive without being obtrusive and has really thought of everything at the villa. We have stayed at dozens of villas but this is the best equipped we have ever experienced. The villa is in it's own private garden with a small orchard and a large patio dining area adjacent to the good size pool. It is so secluded you cannot help but relax. Although it is very private it is also close to the town centre, beaches, bars and restaurants, which are all within ten minutes stroll. The town is quite small but big enough to have a choice of at least twenty restaurants a dozen bars and a lovely marina. There is a great bazaar with shops open from 0930 until very late at night, and a big market every Saturday. Perhaps the highlight of the visit are the two resident tortoises who call by regularly for lettuce, cucumber and fruit. We enjoyed our stay so much we have already booked to return next year.

Hidden Garden is a Hidden Gem | August 2016
Absolutely perfect. James is one of the friendliest and most helpful persons I have ever met. Finding the villa was simple and James was there to meet and greet us with a smile and loads of help. He even took time to help us with finding provisions at 11:30 PM and his fluent Turkish and genuine desire to be of assistance came in handy during our stay. Our security deposit was already in our account the day we got home! Thank you James.
We booked the holiday in June for a late July departure. We looked at several possible villas in the area. We feel so fortunate that we chose Hidden Garden as we saw some of the other places we had looked at and although very fancy and modern, they were all located in huge villa complexes and rather soulless. Not so, Hidden Garden. It sits on its own, with a beautiful walled garden and private pool, within a two minute stroll of all amenities. The villa was just the right size for two teenage girls and my wife and me. It was an oasis of calm to come back to and all four of us made good use of the pool! We loved meeting and feeding Fred and Ginger, and had a lot of fun as a family just lounging around in the patio area after dinner. We felt wonderfully safe both in the villa and everywhere we went during our 10 day stay. We have been to Turkey 6 times and one of the many reasons we keep returning is that we always feel safe. We find the Turkish people to be genuinely warm and welcoming and in spite of recent events, we found that nothing had changed. We treated our hosts with respect and we were rewarded with kindness and laughter wherever we went. We felt so sorry for the locals who were suffering from the downturn in tourism. Having said that, our Easyjet flight out was fully booked so if you are thinking of a last minute break, book early. We always hire a car, so it was easy to visit places like Bodrum and nearby Gumusluk. Can highly recommend both. Even without a car, the Dolmus minibus station is a one minute walk from the Villa and they provide excellent inexpensive service to just about anywhere.
We love to be out at sea when we go to Turkey so we did two full day cruises, one with 30+ guests from Bodrum (thanks for your help arranging it James), and a private cruise from Gumusluk (Ata Boat). Both were unforgettable and not a noisy pirate boat in sight! Watersports are available a ten minute walk from the villa. The girls did para-sailing on the last day and had a great time. Only TKL 200 (£50) including a great video and photos. The local restaurants are great and literally cater to everyone's taste. My wife and the girls enjoyed a day of pampering (manicures, pedicures, hair-braiding etc.) and I had yet another wonderful shave and a haircut Turkish style! If you have never experienced this, you must do it guys. I find it one of lifes' great pleasures, so I avoid shaving for two or three days before finding a local barber. Bodrum airport is beautiful and we were really pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and duty free on offer when we were waiting for our flight home.
We booked this Villa through Peninsula Villas, and can highly recommend their services. Annie and her husband went out of their way to provide us with an excellent holiday. I was a bit worried about some of the villas we looked at on other websites, fearing they might be scammers. But we felt immediately at ease once we had found Peninsula Villas. The only negative that we all agreed upon? We couldn't stay longer...
